Tape to film

Say you make a really good movie and edit on computer and put it on a DVD disk when it's finished. Is there some place you can pay and send your movie that would transfer it to film for you? Do they do that? How much would that be?

a lot of film labs transfer tape to film...but as shirt says it would cost a fortune...you are talking thousands and thousands...this process is usually for adverts that only last 20 seconds or so...did you wonder why the blair witch project cost $40,000? (i think?)...

check out bucks.co.uk...i think they do it.

most serious film festivals will accept a lot of formats... send your tape to a video lab and get it put onto beta sp...it's a widely accepted format...and you wont have to sell you house.

the process they use to transfer tape to film is a laser scanning machine - very expensive and not worth it..
it is also very difficult to write a 60Hz (60i) NTSC (i take it your in america?) to a film running at 24fps cause 60hz digital camera runs at 30fps, the adjustment process results in strange alterations to flow of movement - you need a professional camera to alter these variables (one that allows you to shoot in 24P or 24fps)...

Everybody else is telling you that it is not worth it, but if it is to you then never mind what they say. It is expensive, but if you have the money and your project is shot and lit well, then it may be worth it. However if you are going to do it just to send to festivals, I would say it is a mistake.

The big festivals generally want projects that originated on film (You can tell the difference). I would say either shoot on film from the beginning or submit to festivals that except video.

Why? In my experience, NO ONE transfers video to film unless it is shot on AT LEAST DV PRO tape or another high grade, professional format. Chances you are NOT, as you wouldn't be asking the question. Not only would your footage suffer generation loss, but LESS film festivals would accept it... you KNOB. Most films are shot on film, then transfered to digital for editing, then to tape. Your only 17, your film is probally not near film festival quality, especially if it's your first one. NOW that you've called me an idiot... how about we figure out the logistics of transferring your video onto film...

There have been many features shot on miniDV that have been transfered to film (see http://www.nextwavefilms.com/ulbp/bullfront.html
Most people wait until they get a distributer, and get them to pay for it. Or check out nextwavefilms.com who provide completion funds to low budget films they think are worth it. A lot of the films they helped started out on DV.
